Technology: Tape Backup with Symantec backup Exec
Environment: Any size
Examples: Using Symantec Backup Exec installed on a management server to backup to a tape library.
Install cost: Requires a management server - £2k, a tape library (About £3000 for a Dell Power vault library containing 24 Tapes), Software costs (About £3k to backup 10TB of mixed servers), Professional Services (About £3k - planned and installed in 5 Days). Fire Safe £1k Total: £12k
Management: Requires software to be monitored and tapes to be taken regularly to a safe location
Running Costs: £35 \ Tape - usually another 12 each year (£420). License support \ Software Assurance and hardware maintenance at 20% (£1600)
Ease of restoration: Requires Tapes to be loaded and a trained technician to recover, however there are lots of recovery options from whole servers to individual files and emails. In the event of a loss of building new tape hardware would be required.
Recovery Point: Typically current to the evening before
Recovery Time: Can take a few minutes to restore a couple of files from a tape still in the library to an hour for the same task to locate a tape from the "safe" location, load it into the library and recover. A typical server will take a couple of hours to recover. A site of about 20 Servers would take several days assuming hardware is available.
Retention: Many years.
Further Comments: Great for long term retention, not good for fast recovery from a recent point in time, however lots of recovery options.
